In the mornings we commute, from our homes to work, to school. Some commute to keep themselves occupied after waking up too early or staying up all night. We huddle together in these trains during the hours when we are the most vulnerable, still tired, longing for the softness of the bed or our lovers skins. Our nerves and senses at their most sensitive and we are prone to all sorts of emotions.   We wrap our coats a little bit closer around our bodies when we sit down on a free seat. Headphones and music provide a welcome bubble to hide in, just like looking on the screens of telephones or hiding the face in a book or magazine.   Grumpiness is the…

The feeling you get when you discovered a plant you had never seen before or when holding a stone in an oddly beautiful shape. The memory of days when a little bit of imagination and curiosity would turn your own garden or that place down by the river into an adventure.   The cornfields and old barns with their doors wide open. The cupboard in your neighbors garage with all kinds of secrets hiding inside, the smell of old books and tools. Rust on your fingers and grass stains on your jeans. Sometimes you need to leave the beaten path, take a deep breath and walk towards the unknown. The trail may be stony, flanked with sting-nettles and thorny bushes and maybe you are wearing the wrong shoes because this was not what you were expecting when you left your house in the morning. Yet you keep on walking and marvel at your surroundings, not knowing where you will end up. There are moments, when you think about walking back, scared that the trail will suddenly end with no exit. But maybe sticking to this trail will lead you to a place long forgotten and hidden from the people who rather rely on the paved streets they have gotten used to. You will realize that it’s this very trail, that puts a smile on your face, one you haven’t smiled in a while. You might still wonder where this path will lead you and worry if it was the right one to take, but even if you will have to go back again, because it leads nowhere, at least you will have the feeling of having dared to explore and discover something new, something unexpected and therefore beautiful.

You are sitting outside on the little balcony. The street is crowded with people heading to and from the train station. Some carry a suitcase, others hold each other in tight embraces while walking, afraid of goodbyes or overwhelmed by hellos. You sit, stare and listen. The noise of the city became your soundtrack of choice.   Before you headed straight to your favorite chair on the balcony, you dropped off some bread on the kitchen counter.  You bought it at the bakery next door. I can smell its freshness and feel my stomach turn. Leaning against the railing of the balcony, smoking a cigarette, I had watched you standing infront of the bakery. You had met Antoine with his son. You two were absorbed…

We could, we would. Maybe we can.

A tiny house in a field of lavender. A bunch of people, a long table with good food and different kinds of wine. Red and white, sparkling – whatever we feel like. The sun goes down and the crickets scream from the fields. We have been walking through the woods all day. Some of us have been holding hands while others kept their eyes open for blueberries. Maybe there are not even blueberries in these woods, are they in season yet?   When we arrived everyone brought their favorite books, so we would never run out of pages to read. By now all these pages are already worn out by the hands of their readers. Many had been forgotten on the porch over night,…
