Together with my team at work, I went on an overnight trip to Lago Ritom – a barrier lake in the Piora Valley. After arriving in the afternoon, some colleagues and I enjoyed a 2.5-hour walking tour around the lake that nestled between mountain tops at about 1850 metres above sea level. The hike offered everything from spectacular views to grazing cows, sandy beaches and thick pine forests. See for yourself
You can reach Lake Ritom via the funicular from Piotta. The ride must be spectacular as it is one of the steepest in Europe with a maximum inclination of about 89%. Whilst we went by car, I would not recommend it to anyone. The road is winding and narrow with oncoming traffic. Plus, as the Lago Ritom is so close to the Gottardo Tunnel, it is likely that you will get caught up in a traffic jam – so are better off taking the train.
